BrightRidge Partners With Calix to Electrify Its Utility Business With Fiber Broadband Service

March 12, 2019
Municipal power provider leverages end-to-end Calix solutions to build a simplified broadband network with gigabit speeds and manage the in-home experience

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 12, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) today announced BrightRidge, a local not-for-profit public utility in northeastern Tennessee, has partnered with Calix to launch broadband service to transform its business and better serve its 78,000 subscribers. Deploying broadband service enables BrightRidge to better its communities by offering affordable, high-speed connectivity to the underserved, while making a strategic move to create new revenue streams for the local utility.

BrightRidge began this massive project by bidding out different parts of the network and selected Calix as its partner from the datacenter edge all the way through to the subscriber premises. Core to this broadband initiative is the AXOS platform, which ensures BrightRidge can build its new network utilizing a simplified architecture while dramatically reducing operating costs and time-to-market. BrightRidge has also selected Calix Carrier Class Mesh-Enhanced Wi-Fi as its in-home subscriber offering. To optimize the management of these residential and business networks, BrightRidge is deploying Calix Support Cloud and working with Calix Success Services to quickly adopt best practices and expedite time to value.

“We selected Calix not only for the best-of-breed solutions that enabled us to simplify our network from end-to-end but also for the professionalism they displayed throughout the process,” said Stacy Evans, chief broadband officer for BrightRidge. “In Calix we have a trusted partner who works with us through every step of our deployment and helps us analyze and optimize the ongoing management of our new network.”

With the AXOS platform’s hardware independence, services abstraction, and stateful operation, along with AXOS Diagnostics Toolbox, BrightRidge can be confident its subscribers will have an exceptional experience. Furthermore, BrightRidge will be able to deliver the services, such as 10G, that these subscribers demand while reducing the need for maintenance windows or truck rolls to diagnose network issues.

To usher in high speed internet services all the way into the home, BrightRidge is deploying Calix GigaCenters and 804Mesh satellites. Combined with Calix Support Cloud, which leverages machine learning, BrightRidge has access to the analytics necessary to remotely manage the network and proactively address subscriber issues before they require truck rolls.

“BrightRidge is the latest example in a growing trend of municipal utility providers recognizing the important role broadband plays in the lives of their residents and taking the initiative to deliver that service,” said Skip Hirvela, vice president of sales for Calix. “We are excited to embark on this network journey with BrightRidge and are pleased that they recognize the value in rolling out an end-to-end Calix network. From central office to subscribers, we deliver the flexibility and the best of breed solutions that will ensure these smaller communities in northeastern Tennessee can access the best broadband experience the market can offer.”
